Principle of hydrogen flame ionization detector (FID)
Hydrogen flame ionization detector (FID) is a typical destructive, mass detector that uses the flame generated by the combustion of hydrogen and air as energy. When organic compounds enter the flame burning with hydrogen and oxygen, they are generated at high temperatures. Chemical ionization produces ions that are several orders of magnitude higher than the base current. Under the directional effect of a high-voltage electric field, an ion flow is formed. The weak ion flow is amplified by high resistance and becomes an electrical signal proportional to the amount of organic compounds entering the flame. Therefore, organic matter can be quantitatively analyzed based on the size of the signal.The characteristics of hydrogen flame detector are simple structure, excellent performance, stability and reliability, rapid response, accurate detection and wide linear range. The outstanding advantage of FID is that it can respond to almost all organic substances, especially hydrocarbons, and its response is proportional to the number of carbon atoms. It is not sensitive to inorganic substances such as H2O, CO2 and CS2, and is not sensitive to changes in gas flow rate, pressure and temperature.
