In low-temperature plasma, the energy of particles is generally about a few to several electron volts, which is greater than the binding energy of polymer materials (a few to several electron volts). This energy is sufficient to break the chemical bonds of organic macromolecules to form new bonds; however, it is far below high-energy radioactive rays and only affects the material surface without impacting the bulk properties. In the non-equilibrium state of low-temperature plasma, electrons have relatively high energy and can break the chemical bonds of surface molecules, enhancing the chemical reactivity of particles (greater than that of thermal plasma), while the temperature of neutral particles is close to room temperature. These advantages provide suitable conditions for the surface modification of heat-sensitive polymers. Through low-temperature plasma surface treatment, various physical and chemical changes occur on the material surface, such as etching to create roughness, forming a dense cross-linked layer, or introducing oxygen-containing polar groups, which improve hydrophilicity, adhesion, dyeability, biocompatibility, and electrical properties. Treating the material surface under appropriate process conditions leads to significant changes in surface morphology and the introduction of various oxygen-containing groups, transforming the surface from non-polar and difficult to adhere to, to polar, adhesive, and hydrophilic, which is beneficial for bonding, coating, and printing.
