Flat (row) plate viscometer is mainly used to determine the flow characteristics of ink. This is an instrument built on the principle of ink flow between two parallel plates. A certain amount of ink (about 0.5 ml) is placed between two parallel plates placed horizontally, so that the upper plate with a certain mass (115 grams, made of transparent material) is free to fall horizontally at a fixed height and pressed on the ink. The ink is spread out, and the relationship between the spreading diameter and time is measured until the maximum diameter of the ink is no longer spread out. Taking the log lgt of time t as the abscissa and the spreading diameter d as the ordinate, the characteristic curve that represents the ink flow characteristics to a certain extent can be obtained. There are many circles with different diameters engraved on the surface of the lower plate, so that the ink spreading can be observed and recorded. Usually read the number of turns corresponding to the position of the ink edge at 10 seconds, 60 seconds and 100 seconds and the maximum diameter of the ink when it is no longer spread.
Four parameters of ink, namely apparent viscosity, yield value, slope and intercept, can be determined by parallel plate viscometer.
